In a country like India where almost every student is either an aspiring engineer or doctor, the number of students appearing for engineering entrance exams every year is overwhelming. Now, there is only one common entrance exam for engineering, that is, the Joint Entrance Examination or the JEE, as it is popularly called. Every year, the number of candidates appearing for the JEE Main comes close to 16 lakhs and out of these around 1.5 lakhs get qualified to sit for the JEE Advanced. The JEE Advanced is mandatory for those students who are seeking admission in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
While many students aim to get into institutes like the IITs, IIITs, and NITs, not every student can realise that dream. That does not mean that their dream is shattered. There are private engineering colleges that are as good as (in some cases, even better) the government institutes. Take BITS Pilani, for example. It is deemed to be one of the top private engineering colleges in India 2016. In fact, some think it to be at par with and also better than some of the IITs!
Whatever the case may be, the only common thing among all these colleges is that you need to at least clear the JEE Main or BITSAT (for BITS Pilani).
The JEE Main is conducted by the CBSE while BITSAT is conducted by BITS itself only for students seeking admission in BITS Pilani, BITS Hyderabad, and BITS Goa. Now, when it comes to the JEE Main, the syllabus is taken from the CBSE 10+2 syllabus of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The scope is wide and may students falter because of it. But there is a way to narrow down the scope of studying. Research has shown that in previous years papers, the questions asked and concepts covered does not come from all 11000 concepts in the syllabus. This has helped a great deal in narrowing down the important concepts for the students to focus on during their preparation.
BITSAT syllabus is also similar in terms of the three subjects but it also has 2 additional subjects – English Proficiency and Logical Reasoning. When it comes to PCM in BITSAT, the trick is knowing that it is more about speed. Practice diligently to improve your time management. The key to cracking BITSAT is to ace the 2 additional sections – Verbal and Logical Reasoning. Most students, even top rankers, make the mistake of ignoring these two sections. Your ability to crack these two sections in addition to PCM will allow you to attempt the ‘bonus’ 12 questions in the end. This will make or break your BITSAT score and your chance of getting into your desired BITS campus.
Your behaviour and mental attitude during your BITSAT preparation plays a crucial role in your exam performance and eventually your score. Practice previous years papers and take online mock tests to hone your exam-taking skills and you see a marked improvement as you move from practice to practice.
